Trend Spotlight: Glorious Red
Posted on 02 June 2017
After New York Fashion Week it became evident that red is going to a big colour for the season ahead. We’re taking a look at the hottest colour trend for AW17 and have put together everything you need to know!
There is no bolder or brighter colour choice than red. Commonly associated with seduction, flirtation, love, dynamism and joy! It is the colour of celebration and ceremony - a red carpet is used to welcome distinguished guests (and show off their fashion choices!). It is also the traditional colour of seats in opera houses.
In ancient Egypt, red was associated with life, health, and victory. Egyptians would colour themselves with red ochre during celebrations and Egyptian women used it as a cosmetic to redden their cheeks and lips.
In Europe in the 12th Century, red clothing was a sign of status and wealth. It was worn not only by cardinals and princes, but also by merchants and artisans, particularly on holidays or special occasions. In China, it is considered the colour of good fortune and prosperity, and it is the colour traditionally worn by brides.
Oscar De La Renta's AW17 collection showcased red in all its delicious forms. From oversized fur coats and thick knitwear to tight cigarette trousers and metallic sheen tops, all with matching lipstick-red shoes. But the showstopper of the collection was undoubtedly a floor-sweeping, asymmetric hem gown with a dramatic pointed neckline.
On the Fendi runway the nod to the trend was slightly more subtle. As Ennio Morricone’s “Invenzione Per John” played softly in the background, the models took to the wood-panelled runway in patent red over-knee boots. Whether teamed with a masculine shirt and blazer combination or juxtaposed against lady-like fabrics and 60s mod cuts, the boots anchored each look and tied the collection together.
Jil Sander also featured the hue; showcasing paired down, tonal pieces. Masculine suits with oversized, exaggerated shoulders went down the runway alongside voluminous military inspired coats and simple separates.
In Sarah Bond’s latest collection - One Night in Vienna - Sarah delivers the ultimate, statement, red dress by way of the Valie Siren Dress. This elegant strapless gown fits perfectly to your body, defining your shape. Nipped in at the waist, the evening dress hugs your curves whilst flaring into a mermaid hem for an enviable hourglass silhouette.
For inspiration, Sarah looked to the philosophy and art theories of Viennese artist Valie Export, who explores the issues of female sexuality by means of multimedia art and body performances. In that spirit, Sarah has created a sensual dress to bring out the siren in you! Who says one can't be intellectual and sexy at the same time?
